Light
My darling she said, they’re attracted to your light,
they’re swept into the lightness,
the brightness they desire,
it stirs within all that has long laid silent,
it points the way,
brings visions to life they weren’t sure could be real.
My darling she said, they’re attracted to your light.
But once they realize they’re exposed by the glow,
they can’t face what they see.
The dark corners they’ve left hidden, isolated from love,
the pain they’ve yet to accept or feel suddenly makes your light too much to bear.
So it’s you my darling, that like a flame they smother.
The golden face once full of brightness, now nothing but a mirror of
disappointments and regrets.
Of unresolved sadness
that lives in their dark places.
They’ve taken your light
and replaced it with fight because it comes more naturally than facing the corners.
It’s easier to tell a story than to face their own.
My darling she said, they’re blinded by your light.
They no longer see you, but a reflection of their own brokenness.
In their eyes, you and the brokenness have become one.
It is no wonder that the next time they’re swept into your light,
you are the one that feels broken.
Broken in anticipation of what your light might uncover.
The fear of believing they won’t handle with care;
they won’t let it shine in the way it was meant to – in love and in doubt.
When it exposes the truths that they cannot yet carry they turn away,
back into the corners.
Maybe to face them, or maybe to seek solace in their darkness, and forget.
But darling she said, you mustn’t always keep extending your hand;
for some will stand only in the light to cast their dark shadow,
only a rare few will stand next to you and watch it glow.
My darling she said, be careful with your light.
