Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

I learned all of these facts and more when I met Julia.

  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease also classified as an auto-immune disease of the central nervous system.
  • MS attacks the myelin which protects the nerves.
  • The resulting disrupting in the communication between nerve cells can impact basic functions such as seeing, speaking, walking and learning.
  • MS is 3 times more likely to occur in women than in men.
  • The cause of MS is currently unknown but Canada has one of the highest rates in the world.

CLASH COUGARS

It wasn’t until after my return from a three year stint in Australia, and completing my diploma in Accounting did the four of us #clashcougars become pretty inseparable for many years.

It was also at this point we whole heartedly rallied behind Julia in the fight, and her fight, against Multiple Sclerosis.

It was during this time that ‘Team Julia’ was formed and joined the Edmonton movement to fight against, walk for and raise awareness around Multiple Sclerosis.

Since her diagnosis Julia has been and continues to be a major advocate for MS in the Edmonton community and across Canada, as well as attending MS walks in the USA.

She sat on the board of directors with the MS Society for eight years, is an Ambassador and Spokeswoman for the Edmonton Annual MS Walk, and continues to participate in various media campaigns and events throughout Edmonton.

Keep reading to access articles written by Julia herself in which she shares up close and personal accounts of her diagnosis and experiences living with MS.

Over the years, not only did the Team Julia T-shirts evolve, but so did the Silent Auction Fundraiser and the support for Julia and the rest of the MS community.

As much fun as we had creating and running the event each year, we worked hard making it happen and all went about it with an air of professionalism, a business mindset, and a strong sense of pride.

It brought a strong competent group of woman together for a cause and a friend we would do anything for.

A quick look back at some of these fun filled events and walks that raised money to fund research and programs for individuals living with MS.
